Abstract Background The source of yokukansan (YKS) is thought to be Baoying‐Jinjiang (Hoeikinkyōroku in Japanese) by Xue Ji. YKS was originally designed for children and indicated spasms, clenching teeth, digestive dysfunction due mental instability, insomnia. Key Findings formula consists seven types crude drugs. Clinical studies have revealed that exerts physiological effects including the treatment behavioral psychiatric symptoms dementia (BPSD), preoperative sedation anxiety, postoperative delirium. A meta‐analysis showed could improve BPSD daily living activities; however, no improvement cognitive function observed. Preclinical also reported modulates neuronal pathways central nervous system, serotonergic, glutamatergic, GABAergic, other neurotransmitter pathways. incidence adverse events associated with 5.17%, major effect being pseudoaldosteronism.
